SerE+ SCIENTIFIC WORK CAMP
The SerE+ project – Network of Ecosystem Services Acceleration Areas in the Serra da Estrela – is organising a scientific field camp dedicated to the control of invasive plants from 25 to 31 July 2026.
This initiative forms part of the environmental restoration work in the SerE+ project’s pilot area, located in Mata do Desterro, São Romão, in the municipality of Seia, involving participants in the active management of habitats and the reduction of pressures on ecosystems.
SerE+ aims to identify, map and enhance the ecosystem services of the Serra da Estrela, contributing to more sustainable and resilient management of the area.
The control of invasive species is a key action in this context, as it contributes to the recovery of natural habitats, the improvement of biodiversity and the strengthening of the services that nature provides to communities. By taking part, you will be making a practical and conscious contribution to the conservation of biodiversity and the improvement of the ecosystem services provided by the Serra da Estrela.
The Scientific Work Camp is organised by CISE – Serra da Estrela Interpretation Centre (municipality of Seia) and by Palombar – Conservation of Nature and Rural Heritage – as part of the SerE+ project, in collaboration with the Centre for Functional Ecology at the University of Coimbra and CERNAS (ESAC – Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra), as part of the Invasoras.pt project.
The Mata do Desterro has already hosted five work camps on invasive species, organised in partnership between the Municipality of Seia/CISE, the CEF and CERNAS.

SCIENTIFIC WORK CAMP – Control of Invasive Plants
25–31 July 2026
Serra da Estrela
Over the course of a week, participants will take part in an immersive experience in the Serra da Estrela region, helping to control invasive species – one of the main threats to biodiversity and the balance of ecosystems.
Coordinated and facilitated in partnership with the experienced team from the Invasoras.pt project, this Scientific Work Camp draws on the expertise accumulated by one of the leading national organisations dedicated to the study, monitoring and management of invasive species.
This network has played a key role in raising awareness, conducting applied research and developing best practices for the control of biological invasions, one of the greatest challenges to biodiversity conservation.
What skills will you acquire on this Scientific Work Camp?
