Palombar - Nature  and Rural Heritage Conservation established, in September 2021, a collaboration with the Institute for Research on Hunting Resources of the University of Castilla-La Mancha (IREC, UCLM-CSIC-JCCM), in Spain, under the international project ENETWILD.

This project, which integrates a consortium of leading institutions in the fields of wildlife ecology and health, is coordinated by IREC and funded by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

The ENETWILD project aims to improve the tools and capabilities at European level for monitoring wildlife species populations with regard to their distribution and abundance, developing standardised protocols for data collection and validation, as well as creating and promoting a large common European database at this level. Currently and for the next years, the focus of ENETWILD will be on wild boar (Sus scrofa) populations.

Under this six-year project (2018-2023), data will be collected on wildlife species comparable at European level, with the main objective of assessing more effectively and more rapidly the risks of disease occurrence shared between wild animals - which can be reservoirs of pathogens - domestic livestock and humans, i.e. the risks of zoonoses, diseases and infections transmitted to humans through animals; the data obtained during this project will also be essential for wildlife conservation and management.

European Observatory of Wildlife

As part of the ENETWILD project, the European Observatory of Wildlife (EOW) was also created, an initiative that promotes population and health monitoring of wildlife in Europe. The EOW is coordinated by IREC and developed on the basis of the "One Health" concept, which states that the health of people, animals and environment is one and depends on common and interrelated factors, so the existence of studies and projects that include the assessment of this "common health" is essential to achieve better results in public health. The EOW is structured in a network of observation stations for wildlife monitoring on a European scale.

Palombar will develop actions of the ENETWILD project in the Northeast of Trás-os-Montes region, northern Portugal, more precisely in the Santulhão Hunting Area (ZCA), in Vimioso, Bragança district. This area is one of the study areas of the EOW, becoming part of the network of sampling stations at European level. The management of the monitoring actions in the field is the responsibility of Palombar in close collaboration with the Association of Hunters of Santulhão.
