Lichens "à Moda do Norte"

Lichens
The main objective of the Lichens "à Moda do Norte" project is to promote and diversify the use of lichens, exploring their potential in ecological restoration, forest certification and the creation of value-added products in the fields of gastronomy, cosmetics and natural dyeing. At the same time, the project aims to benefit both the habitats and communities of the North-East Transmontano region, an area that is home to a wide variety of lichens.

This project is coordinated by the BIOPOLIS Association and implemented in partnership with Palombar, AEPGA – Association for the Study and Protection of Donkeys, VERDE - Association for the Integrated Conservation of Nature, the ALDEIA association, the companies FLORADATA and BIOMONTANA, and the Bragança Living Science Centre.

It is supported by the “la Caixa” Foundation’s Promove Programme, in collaboration with BPI and the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), and will run from 2025 to 2028.

The main goals of the project are:
  • To establish a collaborative network to map the distribution of emblematic lichens in the region’s forests;
  • To carry out lichen transplantation trials for ecological restoration;
  • To use lichens as bioindicators for forest certification, specifically FSC certification;
  • To promote the economic value of lichens in the fields of gastronomy, cosmetics and natural dyeing;
  • To systematise information on species and distribution through the creation of the digital platform líquenes.pt;
  • Conduct training initiatives involving local communities and the training of lichenologists.

Líquenes.pt platform

The digital platform líquenes.pt is one of the main tools of the Lichens "à Moda do Norte” project, addressing the need to systematise the currently scarce and scattered information on the lichen species found in Portugal and their distribution. This platform aims to centralise scientific data and promote the use of citizen science tools, such as iNaturalist, enabling a better understanding of the lichen diversity of the North-East Transmontano region through the involvement of local communities in mapping these organisms.

By providing accessible and structured information, the líquenes.pt platform will contribute to the enhancement of the region’s natural heritage and support future applications of lichens in the fields of ecological restoration, forest certification and economic development.

The project’s area of intervention covers the North-East of Trás-os-Montes, with a particular focus on the region’s oak forests.
