Essay on Vultures - documentary for schools
The non-governmental environmental organisation Palombar - Nature and Rural Heritage Conservation, together with the Peripécia Teatro company, produced an environmental awareness documentary about vultures based on the theatre play 'Essay on Vultures' and aimed at schools.
'Essay on Vultures' is an original creation of Peripécia Teatro that resulted from a co-production with Palombar performed under the project 'Sentinels project - Networking for Monitoring Threats to Wildlife', funded by the Environmental Fund - Ministry of Environment and Climate Action, in its environmental awareness component. The theatre play premiered on 25 September 2020 at A Cena, in Vila Real, and is currently touring the country.
The documentary, whose production was financed by the Regional Directorate for Culture of the North (DRCN), aims to raise awareness among the school community of the importance of conserving scavenger birds and to alert them to the threats these species face. At the same time, it addresses the creative process of the production of the show, revealing the fundamental role of the performing art as a mobilizing tool, a transformer of mentalities, for those who make it and those who see it, and a means of environmental education and awareness.
The intersection between theatre, nature conservation, namely of vultures, and the awakening of new generations and the whole community to the vital role played by these species, generally little understood and undervalued, makes this documentary innovative and a pedagogical tool that sharpens curiosity, stimulates and challenges children and young people - and also adults - to get involved in an active and participatory way in the protection of these special living beings that are the vultures.
