The 'UP4REHAB - Landscape Unit for the Restoration of Habitats in Algoso' project developed by Palombar - Nature and Rural Heritage Conservation was approved in October 2022 and is funded to the tune of almost 745,000 euros by the European programme COMPETE 2020 and the REACT-EU initiative, created as part of the European Union's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, in its Support for climate transition - resilience of territories to risk component.

The project's partners are the Association for the Study and Protection of Asinine Cattle (AEPGA), the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (IPB), the Research Centre on Biodiversity and Genetic Resources (CIBIO) of the University of Porto and MORE - Mountains of Research Collaborative Laboratory.

The main objectives of this project are:
  • Promote the restoration of cork oak forests, through the conversion of eucalyptus plantations to this habitat in the intervened area;
  • Improve and conserve the soil in the model area to increase its resilience to climate change and the risk of fire, by combating desertification, through reforestation and actions that promote increased carbon and nutrient fixation in the soil to recover its ecological function;
  • Create the Algoso Local Composting Station, in order to increase organic matter in the soil and enhance its regeneration;
  • Ensure better and more effective sustainable management and conservation of the area and its natural resources.
The project's intervention area is located in the parish of Algoso, in the municipality of Vimioso (Bragança district), in Northeast of Trás-os-Montes region, and is integrated in the Special Area of Conservation and Special Protection Area of the Rivers Sabor and Maçãs of the Natura 2000 Network, as well as in the Meseta Ibérica Transboundary Biosphere Reserve.

The project will carry out soil, habitat and biodiversity assessment and monitoring of the intervention area to promote the holistic restoration of the local ecosystem.
